Incisor enamel microstructure of West Indian caviomorph hystricognathous rodents (Octodontoidea and Chinchilloidea)

چکیده

Analysis of the incisor enamel microstructure extinct and extant West Indian caviomorph rodents emphasizes a clear microstructural distinction between Echimyidae (Capromyinae Heteropsomyinae) among Octodontoidea “Heptaxodontidae”, whose phylogenetic affinities are debated. All capromyines heteropsomyines have pattern characterized by rectangular crystallite arrangement, which is biomechanically strongest in limiting crack propagation most efficiently (subtype [Sbt.] 3 multiserial Hunter-Schreger bands [HSBs]). This condition exclusive to all mainland octodontoids. In stark contrast, “heptaxodontids” sampled here exhibit much less derived subtypes HSBs, with parallel acute angular arrangement (Sbt. 1 [Clidomys], Sbt. 1–2 [Elasmodontomys], low 2 [Amblyrhiza]), well adapted for prevention propagation. The Amblyrhiza Clidomys consistent chinchilloid assignment, as reflected anatomy their auditory region unusual dental pattern. For Elasmodontomys, primitive its difficult reconcile highly nested position within clade (among Capromyinae), recently inferred from aDNA analyses. different patterns caviomorphs indicate distinct high-level taxonomic groups, but restricted Octochinchilloi (Octodontoidea Chinchilloidea) Caviomorpha. great diversity on Caribbean islands resulted intra-archipelago diversification through time, can only be explained sources, implying de facto multiple (potentially time-staggered) natural colonizations Indies. chinchilloid-compatible characterizing Borikenomys lower Oligocene deposits Puerto Rico strongly suggest link some recently-extinct “heptaxodontids”, would substantiate greater antiquity islands.

Blood glucose concentration in caviomorph rodents.

Hystricomorph rodents are a group of species that belong to the suborder Hystricognathi. They mainly inhabit South American (caviomorph) and African (phiomorph) habitats. This group of rodents has a divergent insulin structure. For example, insulin in this group of rodents exhibits only 1-10% of biological activity in comparison to other mammals. Therefore, hystricomorph rodents may hypothetica...

Towards an integrative model of sociality in caviomorph rodents.

In the late 1990s and early 2000s it was recognized that behavioral ecologists needed to study the sociality of caviomorph rodents (New World hystricognaths) before generalizations about rodent sociality could be made. Researchers identified specific problems facing individuals interested in caviomorph sociality, including a lack of information on the proximate mechanisms of sociality, role of ...

Protein content of molar-incisor hypomineralisation enamel.

OBJECTIVES The aim of the study was to compare the relative amounts and nature of the proteinous content of sound and molar-incisor hypomineralisation (MIH) enamel. METHODS TCA (20%) was used to dissolve the mineral phase and precipitate the proteins from enamel pieces sectioned from sound and MIH enamel. The protein content was estimated using a miniaturized version of the method of Lowry et...

Fossil and molecular evidence constrain scenarios for the early evolutionary and biogeographic history of hystricognathous rodents.

The early evolutionary and paleobiogeographic history of the diverse rodent clade Hystricognathi, which contains Hystricidae (Old World porcupines), Caviomorpha (the endemic South American rodents), and African Phiomorpha (cane rats, dassie rats, and blesmols) is of great interest to students of mammalian evolution, but remains poorly understood because of a poor early fossil record. Here we de...

From the Old World to the New World: a molecular chronicle of the phylogeny and biogeography of hystricognath rodents.

Hystricognath rodents include Old World Phiomorpha and New World Caviomorpha. These two groups have an enigmatic biogeographical history. Using a nuclear marker, the exon 28 of the von Willebrand Factor gene (vWF), we reconstructed the phylogenetic relationships among 23 Hystricognathi species. These taxa encompass the complete familial diversity of the Hystricognathi. Our results indicate a ba...
